Alan Simms has a long and varied work experience. Alan began their career in 1995 as a Manufacturing Engineer at Druck Ltd. In 2006, they moved to GE, where they held the roles of Plant Lean Leader, Lean Projects Manager, and Production Manager. In 2017, they joined Baker Hughes, a GE company, as a Brilliant Factory Leader. In 2019, they moved to Druck, a Baker Hughes business, where they held the same role. Finally, in 2022, they were appointed as the Director of Customer Outcomes at Sight Machine.

Alan Simms attended Cambridge House Boys Grammar from 1983 to 1988. Alan then went on to Newcastle University and graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering in 1992.
