Robert MacDonald has a diverse work experience in the energy industry. Robert started their career at the University of Strathclyde as a PhD student, specializing in electrical network investment planning for active distribution networks. Their research focused on integrating the deployment of smart grid technologies, such as Active Network Management (ANM), into network investment planning activities. Robert developed a stochastic optimization model to account for the uncertain operational behavior of the network and the impact of ANM control actions.
Following their doctoral studies, MacDonald joined Smarter Grid Solutions as a Principal Analyst. In this role, they led a team of analysts in delivering consultancy and innovation projects related to the deployment of novel grid management technologies, including ANM and other smart grid solutions. Robert provided expert support to network operators and utilities throughout the full lifecycle of smart grid technology deployment, from early-stage scoping to ongoing operational reviews.
MacDonald later took on the position of Practice Lead: Consultancy and Analysis at Smarter Grid Solutions. In this global leadership role, they had overall responsibility for a team distributed across Europe and North America. Their team delivered high-quality consultancy services in the smart grid and power system analysis domain, assisting network operators and utilities in onboarding smart grid technologies.
Most recently, MacDonald has become the Executive Vice President - Consultancy and UK Sales at Smarter Grid Solutions. Their responsibilities in this role involve leading the consultancy and UK sales efforts of the company.
