Damon Krieger has a comprehensive work experience in the legal field. Damon is currently serving as the Vice President of Legal Affairs and Deputy General Counsel at SMECO since 2023. Prior to this role, they worked at Baltimore Gas & Electric from 2010 to 2023, where they held several positions including Director of Support Services and Associate General Counsel. Damon also has experience in the coal industry, having served as Assistant General Counsel at Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. and Foundation Coal Corporation from 2007 to 2010. Damon Krieger began their education at Gilman School from 1989 to 1993, where they obtained their high school diploma. Damon then pursued their higher education at Connecticut College, where they studied music and government from 1993 to 1997 and earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. Afterward, they attended the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law from 1998 to 2001, where they earned a Doctor of Law (J.D.) degree.

SMECO

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative was founded in 1937. Through the Rural Electrification Administration, the co-op received a loan of $165,000 to construct 175 miles of line to serve 600 customer-members. SMECO operated a generating plant at Popes Creek, Maryland, from 1938 to 1953. SMECO has had five general managers: 1938, Forrest Coakley; 1974, Walter H. Smith; 1989, I. Wayne Swann; 2003, Austin J. Slater, Jr.; and 2020, Sonja Cox. As of January 2020, SMECO served 165,000 customers and is one of the largest electric co-ops in the country. SMECO serves all of Charles and St. Mary's counties, the southern portion of Prince George's County, and all but the northeast portion of Calvert County.
