Nolan Smith has a diverse work experience spanning different industries. Nolan started their career in 2015 as a Cadet at Maersk Line, Limited and later worked as a Cadet at Military Sealift Command. In 2017, they had an internship at The Vane Brothers Company. Nolan then joined Sayres and Associates, Corp in 2018 as a Post Delivery Hull Support Manager, where they worked on various projects including leading hull support management for USS Paul Ignatius and USS Daniel Inouye. Nolan also served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Reserve starting in 2018. Most recently, they joined Systems Planning and Analysis, Inc. in 2023 as a Program Analyst.

Nolan Smith attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy from 2014 to 2018, where they pursued a degree in Maritime Logistics and Security. During their time there, they obtained a Third Mate Unlimited Tonnage License from the U.S. Coast Guard in June 2018. In addition to their academic achievements, Nolan has also obtained various certifications, including the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) from the Project Management Institute in July 2021, and the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the same institution in January 2022.
