Stephen Wheeler has extensive work experience in the energy industry. Stephen currently serves as the Managing Director of SSE Renewables since 2022. Prior to this, they were the Managing Director of SSE Thermal at SSE PLC from 2019 to 2021, where they led strategic disposals and formed joint venture partnerships to align the company with the net-zero future. Before that, Wheeler was the Managing Director of SSE Ireland from 2016 to 2019, responsible for the overall strategy and business development in Ireland. Stephen also held the position of Managing Director at SSE Airtricity from 2010 to 2019. Wheeler has a background in renewable energy, as they served as General Manager of Ireland at SSE Renewables from 2004 to 2010, where they oversaw various windfarm construction projects and development activities. Prior to their roles at SSE, they worked as a Construction Manager at ABB/Siemens. Wheeler also served as the Chairman of IWEA from 2009 to 2014.
Stephen Wheeler has an Executive MBA from the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, which they completed from 2008 to 2010. Stephen also holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from University College Dublin, which they obtained from 1990 to 1994. Additionally, Stephen has completed courses in Mergers & Acquisitions and Corporate Strategy at INSEAD in 2019, as well as Finance for Executives at INSEAD in 2017.
