The company was initially formed to commercialize its unique and patented structural health monitoring solutions – Comparative Vacuum Monitoring (CVM) for microscopic crack detection, particularly in airframe structures.

In 2017, SMS acquired Anodyne Electronics Manufacturing Corp (AEM) based in British Columbia and through this wholly owned subsidiary now comprises three business segments specializing in AEM Avionics, AEM Contract Manufacturing and AEM Comparative Vacuum Monitoring (CVM™).
