Simon Whelan

Simon Whelan is an accomplished leader in data science and analytics with extensive experience in combating financial crime. Currently serving as the Head of Data Science and Analytics for Anti-Financial Crime at Swedbank, Simon oversees approximately 25 data scientists across multiple teams, driving innovative AI solutions and advancing Generative AI initiatives. Previous roles at Swedbank included Data Science Team Manager and Senior Data Scientist at Sandvik, where Simon worked on diverse projects in machining solutions and production optimization. Simon's academic foundations include a PhD in Evolutionary Biology from the University of Cambridge and a BSc in Genetics from the University of Nottingham, complemented by significant research leadership at Uppsala University and The University of Manchester, focusing on computational biology and bioinformatics.
