Barbara Saavedra

Barbara was a staff attorney in the Swords Legal Department, serving for a time as Interim Legal Director. Before that, she was a criminal defense lawyer with a specialty in complex mental health issues and also worked on cases involving the rights of low wage workers and students experiencing housing insecurity and mental health challenges. She is currently a permanent clerk to Justice Kruger on the California Supreme Court. Originally from New Mexico, Barbara received her B.A. from the University of Washington and her J.D. from Stanford Law School. Her father and uncles all served in the U.S. Army.

Swords to Plowshares

For over 45 years, Swords to Plowshares has provided direct services for low-income, homeless, and at-risk San Francisco Bay Area veterans regardless of era of service or discharge status. They are one of the few organizations in the country that provide free legal consultation and attorney representation to veterans seeking assistance with the Department of Veterans Affairs benefits and military discharge upgrade cases.
