Barend Smet has a diverse work experience spanning over several industries. Barend is the President and Co-Founder of THAUMATEC Sp. z o. o., where they provide chip-to-cloud solutions and development services for embedded systems and connectivity. Additionally, they are also the President and Co-Founder of Thaumatec IoT Cloud Services, which offers IoT cloud and data analytics solutions.
Prior to their roles in Thaumatec, Barend co-founded Redsalt B.V., a company that specializes in software research, engineering, and development services. Barend has expertise in developing and integrating software applications and embedded systems, with a focus on M2M, telematics, and telecommunications systems.
Barend also has experience in the energy sector, having worked at Liander as the Manager of the Training and Education department and as a Procesmanager. Barend also served as the Manager of Project Management at Liander and as a Procesmanager at Nuon.
During their career, they have held various positions at other companies such as Vossloh, DHL Freight, and Siemens Nederland B.V., where they had roles in finance, accounting, project management, and consulting.

Barend Smet completed their education at various institutions. From 1990 to 1993, they attended Nyenrode Business University and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) with a focus on Business Administration. In 1992, they briefly studied at Helsingin kauppakorkeakoulu and obtained an MBA degree. Barend Smet then pursued further education at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) from 1994 to 1997, where they obtained a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) specializing in Banking, Corporate, Finance, and Securities Law. In 1996, they also studied at the University of Port Elisabeth, focusing on Economics, although it is not specified whether they obtained a degree from this institution.
