Opinions Editor at The Highlander

Cecile Diroll is currently serving as a Communications Intern at the County of San Mateo, beginning in July 2024, and has held multiple roles at The Highlander since January 2023, including Opinions Editor and Assistant Opinions Editor. In these positions, Cecile has demonstrated strong writing skills by publishing a total of 27 articles focused on the UC system, California politics, and local news. Responsibilities have included leading Editorial Board meetings, mentoring writers, and creating a writing style guide. Additionally, experiences as Head Lifeguard and Swim Instructor at Glenmoor Gardens have honed leadership and customer service abilities. As an Associated Students of UCR Senate Intern, Cecile was actively engaged in student government and legislation initiatives. Cecile is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy at the University of California, Riverside, expecting to graduate in June 2026.

The Highlander

The Highlander is UC Riverside's student-run newspaper. The Highlander Newspaper is committed to the pursuit of truth, the free exchange of information and ideas, and maintaining a fair and independent student voice. The Highlander exists to serve its readership, comprised of University of California, Riverside undergraduate students in particular and the local university community in general. In our pursuit of the truth, we will provide accurate information relevant to the experiences and interests of our readers. The Highlander seeks to foster an environment where student journalists learn the necessary skills to become probing, fair and critical in their writing and thought. We strive to go beyond basic reporting through vigorous investigation, analysis of the facts and creative thinking. The Highlander is currently published each Tuesday during the academic year. First published in 1954, the Highlander remains an independent student media outlet.
