The River School
Nancy Mellon has a diverse work experience spanning over several decades. Nancy began their career at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where they worked at The Listening Center from 1993 to 2002. In 1999, Nancy went on to found The River School, where they served as the Head of School. Later in 2010, they joined Chattering Children as the Executive Director.
Nancy Mellon completed their Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in English at Colby College from 1975 to 1979. Nancy later pursued a Master of Science (MS) degree in Developmental Psychology at The Johns Hopkins University from 1997 to 1999.

The River School
A premier educational program for children 18 months through Grade 3 in Northwest Washington, DC. The River School’s innovative educational model pairs a master’s level educator and a speech language pathologist in each classroom, and focuses on language, literacy and social development. Classroom practice emphasizes experiential and collaborative learning, using thematic curriculum to seamlessly integrate literacy, math, science, drama, music, art, physical education and yoga. The River School’s unique inclusion program is internationally acclaimed. Most students (85% or more) are children with normal hearing; each classroom includes a few children with hearing loss who use cochlear implants or hearing aids. The teaching team supports all of the children in the classroom, with every student greatly benefiting from the rich educational experience.
