John King

John King currently serves as Chancellor of The State University of New York since January 2023. Previously, King held the position of President at The Education Trust from March 2017 to January 2023, and served as President and CEO of the University of Maryland from 2017 to December 2022, where John was also a Professor of the Practice and Visiting Professor. Between January 2015 and January 2017, King was U.S. Secretary of Education, including a period as Acting Secretary. Prior roles include Commissioner of Education at the New York State Education Department, Managing Director at Uncommon Schools, and Middle School Principal at Roxbury Prep Charter School. King holds a Doctor of Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, a Doctor of Law from Yale Law School, a Master of Arts from Teachers College, and a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University.
