Alastair H. is a Senior Optomechanical Engineer at TMT International Observatory LLC, leading the engineering effort for the secondary mirror system of the Thirty Meter Telescope since October 2017. Previous experience includes serving as a Staff Scientist at Caltech, where Alastair contributed to the first direct detection of gravitational waves, leading to a Nobel Prize in Physics, and worked as a Laser Engineer, designing thermal compensation systems for Advanced LIGO detectors. Alastair has held postdoctoral research positions at the University of Glasgow and MIT, focusing on laser gyroscope development and fused silica fiber systems for gravitational wave observatories. Alastair holds a PhD and a BSc in Physics from the University of Glasgow.
