John MacKenzie has a diverse range of work experience. John began their career at the Government of Ontario in 2001, working in the Ministry of Environment until 2004. John then transitioned to the Ontario Realty Corporation in 2005 and remained there until 2011. During this time, they held various roles within the organization. In 2011, MacKenzie joined the City of Vaughan, initially as the Commissioner of Planning and then later as the Deputy City Manager, specifically in the Planning & Growth Management department. Finally, in 2017, they became the Chief Executive Officer of the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA).
John MacKenzie has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Urban and Environmental Studies / Geography Co-Major from Brock University. John also holds a Master's Degree in City/Urban, Community and Regional Planning from the University of Toronto.

With more than 60 years of experience, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) is one of 36 Conservation Authorities in Ontario, created to safeguard and enhance the health and well-being of watershed communities through the protection and restoration of the natural environment and the ecological services the environment provides. TRCA’s vast jurisdiction comprises the following nine watersheds, plus their collective Lake Ontario waterfront shorelines: • Carruthers Creek • Don River • Duffins Creek • Etobicoke Creek • Highland Creek • Humber River • Mimico Creek • Petticoat Creek • Rouge River More than 3.5 million people live within TRCA-managed watersheds, and many others work in and visit destinations across our jurisdiction. The population within TRCA’s jurisdiction is expected to grow significantly in the years to come. These watersheds span six upper-tier and 15 lower-tier municipalities. Some of Canada’s largest and fastest growing municipalities, including Toronto, Markham and Vaughan, are located entirely within the TRCA watershed jurisdiction.
