Garrett Smith has extensive experience in nuclear safety and regulatory affairs, currently serving as the Director of the Office of Nuclear Safety at the U.S. Department of Energy since February 2009. This role involves establishing nuclear safety policy requirements to protect workers, the public, and the environment. Previously, Garrett held leadership positions at the Department of Energy, including Director of the Office of Nuclear Safety Basis and Facility Design, and served as Senior Investigator focusing on Price Anderson Enforcement. Earlier in the career, Garrett was the Safety and Licensing Manager at the National Nuclear Security Administration, supporting licensing efforts with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, as well as an Engineer at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Garrett holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University at Buffalo.
