Allen Smith has a diverse work experience in various roles and industries. Starting in 1998, they worked as a Technical Project Manager, managing custom web projects for businesses and individuals. Allen also had experience as a Freelance Producer in the motion picture industry, where they produced multimedia projects and coded websites using object-oriented programming.
In 2010, Allen became the Director of Information and Technology for PermaCrete/Quality Systems, Inc., a chemical and construction materials manufacturer. Allen managed all information systems and technology, ensuring IT supported day-to-day operations and served as a strategic partner in achieving business objectives.
From 2011 to 2012, they worked as the Forensic Information Systems Manager for Metro Nashville Police Department Recruiting, overseeing information systems and services for a crime laboratory. Allen led digital transformation efforts for administrative and scientific processes.
In 2012, Allen joined YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee as the Head of Information & Technology. Allen managed information systems and services, leading efforts for digital transformation and migration to a unified system tailored to the agency's mission and business needs.
From 2015 to 2019, Allen worked at GitHub as a Developer Relations professional. Allen built and led a strategic creative department, produced developer relations content, developed design systems, and automated processes to scale production.
Allen also had experiences at Automattic as part of Developer Relations and Advocacy, at Gatsby as an Interim Head of Product Marketing, and Drop Table Records as the President.
Most recently, in 2022, Allen joined Umbraco as the Developer Relations Lead, further utilizing their expertise in developer relations.
Allen Smith obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree from Boston University between 2007 and 2009. Prior to that, from 2003 to 2005, they completed their undergraduate studies at The University of Texas at Austin, earning a BS degree. In 2004, Allen participated in the German and European Studies Program at The Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg.
