Karen Sherk Chio, MPH (she/her), is Upstream’s Director of Training Implementation. She leads the implementation strategy and the talented team that delivers training for clinicians and staff at health agencies across all states where Upstream works.
Since 2000, Karen has dedicated her career to mission-driven work in health and education. Before coming to Upstream USA in 2019, she was the Associate Director for Executive Education at Harvard Medical School, leading the operations of the Executive Education function. Prior to her work at Harvard, Karen worked for 15 years at Management Sciences for Health, a global public health non-profit. There she led complex education and training programs in multiple languages for thousands of health professionals in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. She is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer who taught English as a Foreign Language in Madagascar.

Upstream USA works to expand opportunity by reducing unplanned pregnancy across the U.S. They work in partnership with health centers to strengthen reproductive care and autonomy by increasing equitable access to the full range of contraceptive options. Founded in 2014, Upstream is on track to achieve nationwide impact at scale. Their goal through 2024 is to partner with health centers that serve over 1 million women across four states. This ambitious plan for growth has received generous support from philanthropic individuals and foundations, including a $60 million lead investment by Blue Meridian Partners. Their unique approach has been featured in The New York Times, Washington Post, the Atlantic, CNN, Vox, and Marie Claire.
