Muktar Aliyu

VUMC Endowed Directorship In Global Health at Vanderbilt University Medical Center

Muktar Aliyu currently serves as the VUMC Endowed Director in Global Health and Director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health at Vanderbilt University Medical Center since July 2019. Muktar holds the position of Professor of Health Policy and Medicine at the same institution. Prior to this, Muktar worked at Meharry Medical College from August 2009 to July 2022, where roles included Professor of Family and Community Medicine, Associate Program Director of the Occupational Medicine Residency Program, and Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine. Muktar also contributed to Vanderbilt University between June 2009 and June 2022 as Associate Director of Research and in various academic roles. Earlier experiences include directorship at Friends in Global Health LLC in Nigeria and academic positions at Mayo Clinic and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in Nigeria. Muktar's educational background includes a Doctor of Public Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, a Master’s in Public Health from The George Washington University, and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Ahmadu Bello University.
