Ian Murray is an experienced Data Scientist currently working at the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) since March 2023. Previously, Ian held the same position at KLDiscovery from July 2021 to March 2023, focusing on natural language processing solutions for eDiscovery. Ian's background includes significant expertise in machine learning and deep learning as a subject matter expert at Micron Technology, where contributions were made to research and development in semiconductor manufacturing from October 2018 to May 2021. Ian's academic journey culminated in a Doctor's Degree in Nuclear Physics from Université Paris-Saclay, along with a Master's degree from the University of Jyväskylä and a Bachelor's degree in Honours Physics from Western University. Prior to their data science career, Ian's research experience includes work as an International Program Associate at RIKEN and a summer internship at CERN, where development of ion optics for mass spectrometry was undertaken.
World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO)
The World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) unites every company and country in the world with an operating commercial nuclear power plant to achieve the highest possible standards of nuclear safety. Based in London with regional centres in Moscow, Atlanta, Tokyo and Paris, WANO cuts across political barriers and interests. The organisation exists purely to help its members accomplish the highest levels of operational safety and reliability. This is achieved through a series of programmes which include peer reviews, technical support and access to a global library of operating experience. WANO is a non-profit organisation. A Governing Board sets policies which are implemented across the regional centres. Day-to-day work in these centres is overseen by WANO’s Executive Leadership Team and the programmes are managed by permanent and seconded employees drawn from members around the world. While WANO works directly with its members, the organisation is not a regulatory body and does not advise companies on issues such as initial reactor design selection. With safety as the only goal, WANO helps operators communicate effectively and share information openly. Experience shows many accidents could have been prevented if lessons had been learned from previous incidents. Ultimately, this will raise the performance of all operators to that of the best.
