Peter de Groot

Scientist Emeritus at Zygo

Peter de Groot has a strong background in research and development in the field of optical metrology. Peter started their career as a Research Scientist at Perkin Elmer from 1987 to 1990, where they focused on optical metrology. Peter then moved on to work as a Research Scientist at Boeing from 1990 to 1992, continuing their work in optical metrology. In 1992, Peter joined Zygo Corporation, where they held various positions, including Executive Director of R&D and currently serves as the Chief Scientist. At Zygo, they are involved in the design, development, and manufacture of optical metrology solutions. In addition to their work in the industry, Peter has also held academic positions, including Adjunct Professor roles at the University of Hartford and the University of Bridgeport. Peter is currently an Honorary Professor at the University of Nottingham. Overall, Peter de Groot's work experience demonstrates their expertise and leadership in the field of applied optics and optical metrology.

Peter de Groot obtained a BA in History from the University of Utah in 1980. Peter then pursued an MS in Physics at the University of Maine from 1983 to 1984. Peter further obtained a Lic degree in Physics from Université Grenoble Alpes in 1983. Later, they earned a PhD in Physics from the University of Connecticut between 1984 and 1987. In 2009, they attended the Harvard Business School and received a certificate in Leading Product Innovation.

ZYGO Corporation is a global leader in the design and manufacture of advanced optical metrology systems and ultra-precise optical components and assemblies. Our Metrology business segment is comprised of three major groups: optical surface profilers, laser interferometers, and stage position metrology. The products and systems produced by these groups use various optical techniques for measuring displacement, surface shape, and texture. Applications for our metrology products are diverse, and include precision machining, optical manufacturing, and semiconductor manufacturing, as well as many others. Our Optics business segment is comprised of two major groups: Electro-Optics and Optical Components. These groups leverage ZYGO's expertise in optical design and assembly, and high-volume manufacturing of precision optical components and systems, for aerospace, defense, medical, and industrial applications. Founded in 1970, and headquartered in Middlefield, Connecticut, USA, ZYGO's global operations are supported by approximately 500 dedicated and highly-skilled individuals around the world. ZYGO is driven by a passion for innovation, as evidenced by approximately 1,200 patents awarded since the Company's founding. In 2014, ZYGO became part of the Ultra Precision Technologies Division of AMETEK, Inc., a leading global manufacturer of electronic instruments and electro-mechanical devices. With annual sales over $4 billion, AMETEK has more than 15,000 colleagues at nearly 150 operating locations across the United States and in 30 other countries. ZYGO enjoys mutually-beneficial relationships with its AMETEK sister companies, collaborating on technologies and sharing resources in order to provide the best possible experience for our customers. While we are a part of the AMETEK family, we are still the same Zygo Corporation that you have known and trusted for 50 years, committed to serving your precision metrology and optics needs now and in the future.
