National Gold Together Youth Ambassador at American Cancer Society

Sonya Kulkarni is a dedicated research assistant at MD Anderson Cancer Center since May 2022, focusing on rapid screening of colorectal cancer using next-generation sequencing to aid personalized treatment plans. As a National Gold Together Youth Ambassador for the American Cancer Society since January 2021, advocacy efforts target childhood cancer patients. In roles as Executive Editor-in-Chief at Three Penny Press, Sonya led a team to produce a print newsmagazine and online content. As the founder and CEO of STAAR Peers, a nonprofit organization, resources are provided to support students in excelling on the STAAR exam. Sonya represents a large student district as a member of the Legislative Advisory Committee for Houston ISD. Research contributions extend to projects at Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Houston, involving genetic research and pediatric assessments, respectively. Additionally, freelance writing endeavors are pursued with Medium, while academic pursuits include a Bachelor of Science in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Economics at Harvard University.
