Janel Thamkul has extensive experience in the legal field, starting with their role as a Legal Extern at the U.S. Department of Justice in 2007. Janel then worked at Farella Braun + Martel LLP as an Associate from October 2008 to August 2015, where they defended a file-hosting service against litigation claims and supervised junior associates and paralegals. In August 2015, Janel joined Google as a Product and Commercial Counsel, advising the Play and YouTube digital content teams on legal risk mitigations and helping with market expansion launches. Janel later became the Senior Product Counsel and Legal Manager for Google AI in June 2018, where they provided legal guidance on various topics, including AI development, copyright, patents, product liability, and open source platforms. Janel's most recent role is the Deputy General Counsel at Anthropic, starting in February 2023.
Janel Thamkul has a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts from UCLA. Janel also holds a J.D. degree from the University of California, Berkeley - School of Law.
