Velma Korbel is the Vice President, Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer of APi Group. Korbel is widely respected for her work in advancing equal opportunity.
Korbel joined the APi leadership team in November 2020 after more than 25 years in the public sector furthering civil rights. Korbel is APi Group’s first Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer.
Before joining APi, Korbel spent 10 years with the City of Minneapolis as Director of the Department of Civil Rights. Before that, she served as Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Human Rights and Director of Diversity & Equal Opportunity for the Metropolitan Council. In her various roles in addition to enforcing civil rights laws at the state and local levels, Korbel created a leadership development program, shaped organizational culture, sponsored employee resource groups, and partnered with leaders to execute diversity, equity and inclusion strategies across the organizations where she served in a senior leadership capacity.
Korbel is a member of the Minnesota Women’s Economic Roundtable, a member of the Boards of Directors of Girl Scouts River Valley, Achieve Minneapolis, and Urban League Twin Cities. She also is a trustee of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and Chairperson of the Minnesota Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. She is a veteran of the United States Navy.
