Mr Steven Verschuur was born in 1977 in Arnhem (Netherlands). He studied law at the Universiteit Utrecht (University of Utrecht, Netherlands) and obtained a master’s degree in law there in 2001. He continued his university education at l’université de Liège (University of Liège, Belgium), where he was awarded a diplôme d’études approfondies (diploma of advanced studies) in European law in 2002. He defended his doctoral thesis in law in 2010 at the University of Utrecht.
From 2002 onwards, Mr Verschuur pursued a career as a lawyer with various law firms in the Netherlands and in Belgium, in various areas of EU law such as competition, State aid, trade policy, public procurement or restrictive measures adopted in the context of the common foreign and security policy of the Union.
He also wrote a considerable number of articles on those subjects for legal journals and publications.
Simultaneously, he was a Deputy Judge in the Civil Law Division of the Rechtbank Zeeland-West-Brabant (District Court, Zeeland-West-Brabant, Netherlands) from 2021 to 2022.
Mr Verschuur was appointed a Judge at the General Court on 15 September 2022.

The Court of Justice of the European Union is the judicial body of the EU. Its role is to ensure that EU laws are respected by the EU’s institutions and Member States and applied in the same way throughout the whole of the EU. This ensures that the EU is based on the rule of law, a fundamental element of all democratic entities.
