Matthew Notowidigdo

Scientific Director at J-PAL

Matthew Notowidigdo is a professor of economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and Scientific Director of J-PAL North America. His research broadly focuses on labor and health economics. He studies the causes and economic consequences of unemployment duration and insurance, as well as the impacts of health and health insurance on labor markets. Notowidigdo holds a master's in engineering and PhD in economics from MIT. In 2008, he was a selected participant in the Lindau Nobel Laureate meetings. He received the Carleton B. Tucker Award for Outstanding Teaching from MIT, as well as Excellence in Refereeing Awards from the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the American Economic Review, and the Journal of the European Economic Association.

The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) was established in 2003 as a research center at the Economics Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Since then, it has grown into a global network of researchers who conduct randomized evaluations to test and improve the effectiveness of programs and policies aimed at reducing poverty.
