Frank Mertens has extensive work experience in various roles and companies. Their most recent position is as the Head of R&D Laboratory at Leybold since April 2022. Prior to that, they worked at Tenneco from 2001 to 2021, where they held the role of Manager Product Test Center from January 2007 to June 2021, and Testingenieur Forschung/Entwicklung from August 2001 to December 2006. Before Tenneco, they worked at Kautex Textron as a Projektingenieur from February 1999 to July 2001. Frank also has experience at Robens Transporte GmbH & Co KG, where they were involved in Gefahrguttransporte, Fahrzeugumbauten, Fuhrparkwartung from April 1988 to January 1999. Frank started their career at Philips Lighting as a Werkzeugmechaniker from January 1992 to February 1993.

Frank Mertens completed their education in two stages. From 1989 to 1992, they attended Philips Licht GmbH, where they successfully passed the examination before the IHK (Industrie- und Handelskammer) in the field of Werkzeugmechaniker Stanz- und Umformtechnik. Later, from 1993 to 1998, they studied at Rheinische Fachhochschule Köln, earning a degree in Maschinenbau (Diplom-Ingenieur).
