Isuru Herath is a highly experienced professional in nuclear safety and engineering, currently serving as a Nuclear Safety Inspector specializing in Fault Analysis at the Office for Nuclear Regulation since April 2022. Prior roles include Principal Engineer and Senior Specialist Engineer for Safety & Reliability at Collins Aerospace from May 2019 to April 2022, and Senior PSA Engineer at Horizon Nuclear Power from July 2017 to March 2019. Isuru's career began at Frazer-Nash Consultancy, where various roles included Group Leader and Safety Consultant from July 2010 to July 2017. Earlier experience includes working as a Systems and Safety Engineer at Conekt - UK, focusing on functional safety analysis for advanced vehicle technologies. Isuru holds a PhD in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Birmingham, alongside a Post Graduate Certificate in Hydrogen Safety from Ulster University and a BEng (Hons) in Electronic and Electrical Engineering/Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Birmingham.

ONR independently regulates nuclear safety and security at 35 nuclear licensed sites in the UK. We also regulate transport and ensure that safeguards obligations for the UK are met. Our duty is to ensure that the nuclear industry controls its hazards effectively, has a culture of continuous improvement and maintains high standards. The nuclear industry is undergoing rapid change and our role as a regulator is vital in ensuring new nuclear facilities are designed, built and operated to the highest standards, and in a manner that improves public confidence without compromising safety or security. We also oversee the decommissioning of nuclear sites and cooperate with international regulators on safety and security issues of common concern, including associated research. Our work is critical to the protection of society at large so it is important that we do it with rigour, diligence and with an appropriate level of assurance. Comment policy: as a national regulator, it is important that we maintain our independence. As part of this, we moderate our social media presence and may need to review comments if necessary, for example where our impartial role in an investigation may be compromised.
