Sylvia Laboy

Sylvia Laboy is an accomplished professional in the field of civil engineering, currently serving as the AVP Senior Scientist focused on wind vulnerability at RenaissanceRe since May 2013. Prior to this role, Sylvia engaged in academia as a Research Teaching Assistant at the University of Florida, investigating the vulnerability of residential infrastructure in hurricane-prone regions while also teaching reinforced concrete analysis and design. As a professor and coordinator at Caribbean University, Sylvia guided students in civil engineering analysis and research, and contributed as a technical trainer and mentor. Sylvia's experience includes field inspection and project management with MSR Desarrolladora Caribeña, Inc. and as a residential contractor with Construcciones LARU, INC. Educational qualifications include a Ph.D. in Structural and Wind Hazard Engineering and a Critical Infrastructure Protection Certificate from the University of Florida, a Master's degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University, and a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez.
