Kelvin McKinnon has extensive work experience in various engineering roles. Kelvin started their career in 1998 as a Maintenance Engineer at United Maintenance Pty Ltd and then worked as an Electrical Engineer at UGL Limited from 2000 to 2003. In 2003, they worked as a Project Engineer - Electrical at Sinclair Knight Merz before joining Camms Pty Ltd as a System Integration Engineer until 2005. From 2005 to 2006, they worked as a Commissioning Engineer at Tenix Alliance. Kelvin then joined RJE Global Pty Ltd as an Electrical Engineer in 2006 and held that position until 2016. Kelvin then worked at LogiCamms as a Principal Electrical Engineer from 2016 to 2017. From 2017 to 2018, they worked as a Senior Engineer - Secondary Systems at Consolidated Power Projects Pty Ltd. Currently, they are serving as the Chief Engineer at RJE Global Pty Ltd since 2018.

Kelvin McKinnon obtained a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Electrical Engineering from the University of South Australia, where they studied from 1992 to 1997. Kelvin then pursued a Graduate Certificate in Computing at Monash University in 1999. Prior to their university education, Kelvin McKinnon attended Christies Beach High School from 1986 to 1991. In terms of additional certifications, they became a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland in March 2016 through The Board of Professional Engineers of Queensland. Kelvin also earned the title of Chartered Professional Engineer in February 2016 from Engineers Australia.
