Lead Veterinary Technician - ICU at Southeast Veterinary Neurology

MAJOR DUTIES

• Properly administer medications, taking scheduled TPRs on each hospitalized patient as dictated by doctor orders.

• Observe and communicate progress of each patient to the doctor during rounds and evaluations.

• Prepare daily treatment sheets for patients being admitted to SEVN and daily treatment sheets for hospitalized patients.

• Preparing prescription labels as needed with correct quantity and dosing information.

• Communicate effectively with clients as needed for recalls, lab work, patient updates, etc. Provide exceptional customer service by anticipating client’s needs.

• Be available for introductions to owners of hospitalized patients at drop-off.

• Proper opening and closing protocols as outlined on morning and evening checklists for this position.

• Cleaning, walking, feeding hospitalized animals as needed.

• Administering medications (oral, injectable, rectal) to boarding and hospitalized patients as needed.

• Enter each treatment and charge into the practice software as they are being performed. Audit digital medical records for accuracy twice daily ensuring accuracy of charges and primary provider.

• Ensure all animals are clearly labeled and all treatment information is properly logged on treatment forms and entered into medical records. Maintain an accurate white-board.

• Strong understanding of formulas used to calculate dosing of medications and fluids.

• Perform treatment room specific procedures and treatments including but not limited to:

• Monitoring CRIs

• Calculating drug doses

• Performing bladder expressions

• Writing treatment sheets (with doctor approval)

• Placing, monitoring and maintaining urinary catheters

• General restraint on small animals as needed for treatments, catheter placements, examinations, x-ray, etc

• Proper positioning for x-ray

• Cytosar treatments (injections and CRI administration)

• Help maintain overall cleanliness:

• Trash is collected

• Restocking lab, treatment area

• Dusting counter space and laboratory machines

• Sweep, vacuum, and mop floors as needed

• Cleaning cages as they become available

• Perform proper animal restraining techniques for examinations, treatments and procedures.

• Prepare all documents needed for the discharge of hospitalized patients (complete discharge checklist for each patient).

• Knowledgeable regarding related federal and state animal health laws and regulations including OSHA.

• Attend and participate in rounds at the beginning of shift. Attend and participate in bi-weekly departmental meetings. Complete projects within a timely manner as directed by the Head Veterinary Technician.

• Assist in the training of newly hired Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Technician Assistants and Volunteers.

• Assistance with euthanasia and after-care.

• Regularly perform inventory counts and stock areas as needed and directed by the Head Technician.

• Provide input on co-workers for annual 360 performance evaluations. Participate in staff lecture series. Contribute information obtained from CE events at bi-weekly technician meetings.

• Participate in community events that take place throughout the year, assisting with set-up and break-down, educating potential clients about our hospital and services.

• Participate in holiday shift sign-ups.

• Lift small animals up to 50 pounds. Lift, with help, small animals over 50 pounds.

• Entering medical record entries into veterinary software as treatments are completed.
