Symphogen
Andrea Vala has extensive work experience in the field of protein research and purification. Andrea has worked in various scientific roles at different companies and academic institutions.
Andrea'smost recent position was as a Senior Scientist at Symphogen, starting in April 2023.
Prior to that, they worked at Novo Nordisk as a Senior Scientist from September 2019 to April 2023.
From 2012 to 2019, Andrea was the Academic Coordinator of the Prokaryotic team and the Purification team at Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research, University of Copenhagen. Andrea'sresponsibilities included coordinating a team of technicians, working on the expression and purification of human recombinant proteins, and scientific coordination for projects related to E. coli expression and purification of proteins.
Before joining Novo Nordisk, Andrea worked as a Post-doc at Aalborg University from 2010 to 2012. Andrea'swork involved expressing and purifying fungal secreted proteins and antimicrobial peptides using an E. coli high throughput expression system.
Andrea also held a Post-doc position at Copenhagen University from 2007 to 2010, where they characterized the role of the human selenoprotein VIMP in ER-associated degradation and optimized the expression of variant proteins.
Andrea began their career as a Visiting Graduate Student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 2000 to 2005. Andrea focused on studying the pathway of disulfide bond formation in the endoplasmic reticulum of S. cerevisiae.
Throughout their career, Andrea has gained expertise in protein expression, purification, and characterization, as well as coordinating scientific projects and leading teams.
Andrea Vala obtained a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Lisbon, where they studied from 1999 to 2008. Prior to that, they completed a Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry at the same university, spanning from 1994 to 1999. In 1999, they also attended the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia for a brief period, although the specific degree or field of study is not mentioned. Additionally, Andrea Vala pursued language studies at Studieskolen in 2008, focusing on Danish.
