Prior to this, they served as a Senior Database Administrator at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust from October 2016 to July 2022. Before that, they worked at Canterbury College as a Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer from October 2014 to October 2016 and as an Application Technician from October 2012 to October 2014. In 2012, they also worked as an IT Consultant/Technician for a short period of time as a self-employed individual. Furthermore, they have experience at Pfizer as a Senior Associate in Global Records Management Services from October 2010 to July 2012 and in Regulatory Information Management from January 2008 to October 2010. James'searliest work experience can be traced back to Audata Ltd where they served as an Information Management Specialist & IT Technician from January 2000 to December 2007.

In 1997, they attended Canterbury Christ Church University and pursued a BTEC HNC in Business IT & Computer Science, which they completed in 1999.
In 2000, they obtained a Microsoft Certified Practitioner (MCP) degree from Microsoft. James'sfield of study for this degree included NT4 Workstation, Enterprise Server, and IIS.
In 2004, they studied at Westminster College and earned a degree in Oracle 9i Professional DBA in the field of Information Technology.
In 2006 and 2007, they attended the Chartered Management Institute and obtained a Certificate in Management.
In 2011, they studied at APMG Group and gained Foundation & Practitioner Certificates in PRINCE2 Project Management.
In 2013, they enrolled in the Linux Professional Institute and obtained a Linux Certified Professional Level 1 degree in Information Technology.
Lastly, in 2014 and 2015, they attended the Cisco Networking Academy to obtain a CCNA degree in Computer Systems Networking and Telecommunications.
