Michel De Smet has a diverse work experience in the field of engineering. Michel started their career as a Research Assistant at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven - Mechanical Engineering Department from September 1987 to November 1990. Following this, they joined Tractebel Engineering (GDF-SUEZ) in December 1990 as a Structural Analyst in the Structural Mechanics Department - Nuclear Entity. Michel worked in this role until December 2004. From January 2005 onwards, they served as a Principal Engineer in the Mechanical Equipment Department - Nuclear Entity at the same company.

Michel De Smet earned a Master's degree in Electromechanical Engineering from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Michel attended the university from 1982 to 1987.
