Alex Pires

Alex Pires is currently serving as Programme Management Officer and Wastewater Team Leader at the UN Environment Programme, focusing on source-to-sea pollution. Previously, Alex worked as a Senior Evaluation Consultant for FAO, evaluating contributions to Sustainable Development Goal 6, and led the evaluation of a GEF Biodiversity project in Chile. Academic roles include being a Professor at Universidade Federal da Bahia, contributing to courses on science technology and innovation, and serving as Deputy Coordinator of the UNESCO Chair on Sustainability. Alex has held senior consultancy positions with UNDP and the Inter-American Development Bank, specializing in integrated water resource management, climate change projects, and independent evaluations. Alex holds a PhD in Sustainability Studies from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and has obtained multiple degrees in engineering and environmental technology from various institutions.
