Liping Zhang has extensive work experience in the field of science, technology, and innovation for development. From October 2009 to July 2020, they served as a Senior Economic Affairs Officer and later as the Chief of the Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Section at UNCTAD. In September 2022, Liping Zhang took on the role of Chief of the Science, Technology and Innovation for Development Section at UNCTAD. Prior to joining UNCTAD, they had a long career at the Ministry of Commerce, China, starting as a junior staff and rising to the position of Deputy Director-General over a period of 21 years, from 1988 to October 2009.

Liping Zhang attended the University of International Business and Economics from an unknown start year until 1988. Afterwards, they studied at the University of Adelaide until 1999.
