UPM Uruguay

UPM's operations in Uruguay include the pulp mill in Fray Bentos, the forestry and wood supply company UPM Forestal Oriental with its two nurseries, UPM Foundation and the growth project for the new pulp mill in the center of the country. UPM Forestal Oriental manages around 270,000 hectares of plantable areas, including its own properties and those of rural producers, through the Development Program. UPM's forest plantations are certified. The pulp mill at Fray Bentos began operations in 2007 and continues to be one of the most modern and efficient factories in the world. In addition to pulp, the plant also produces energy through biomass. Founded in 2006, the UPM Foundation works in coordination with local interest groups to promote the development of communities through education, training and entrepreneurship, promoting a culture of healthy living. UPM directly and indirectly employs 7,000 people in Uruguay and its contribution to the national GDP is 1.4%.
