Maitshwarelo Matsheka is a seasoned researcher with extensive experience in the field of nanomaterials and microbiology. Currently serving as the Lead Researcher at the Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI) since July 2023, Maitshwarelo previously held the position of Senior Researcher at the same institution from August 2015 to August 2023. Prior to this, Maitshwarelo was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Botswana from June 2006 to July 2015. Academically, Maitshwarelo holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Medical Microbiology and Bacteriology from the University of Cape Town, earned between 1996 and 2000, as well as a Master of Science (MSc) in Microbiology from the University of East Anglia, completed from 1993 to 1995.

Corporate Profile Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI) was established in 2012 as a Government of the Republic of Botswana company limited by guarantee, to conduct needs-based research and development in focused areas, in accordance with national priorities. BITRI falls under the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology (MOTE). The technologies will as much as possible maximize the use of local materials to ensure efficiency and affordability. BITRI will harness its institutional capacity as well as collaborate with other organizations and institutions.
