Julia Lane has a long and varied work experience. Julia began their career in 1997 as a Senior Research Fellow at the Census Bureau. In 2004, they became a Program Director at the National Science Foundation. In 2005, they moved to NORC as a Senior Vice President with corporate officer responsibilities, managing survey and research staff and responsible for business development. In 2008, they returned to the National Science Foundation as a Program Director in the Science of Science and Innovation Policy. In 2012, they became a Senior Managing Economist at the American Institutes for Research, as well as a Professor at the University of Melbourne and Université de Strasbourg, where they were attached to the BETA Bureau d'Economie Théorique et Appliquée. Julia also became a Chercheur Associe at the Observatoire des sciences et des techniques (OST). In 2015, they became a Professor at New York University, and in 2018 they became a Co-Founder of the Coleridge Initiative.

Julia Lane obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Economics from the University of Missouri-Columbia between 1977 and 1984. Julia also obtained a Ph.D in Economics and German from the University of Missouri-Columbia between 1977 and 1982, as well as an M.A in Statistics from the same school between 1977 and 1982. Julia obtained their B.A in Economics and Japanese from Massey University, New Zealand between 1974 and 1977.
