Leonard Ripley has had a diverse work experience in environmental engineering and hydrology. Leonard started their career in 1975 as a Hydrologist at the Texas Department of Water Resources, where they worked for three years. In 1980, they joined the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a Teaching/Research Assistant, focusing on methane production and process monitoring in anaerobic digestion. Leonard also served as a teaching assistant for various environmental engineering courses. Leonard then worked as an Environmental Engineer at Applied Technologies, Inc. Engineers - Architects from 1987 to 1990. During this time, they gained experience in wastewater treatment and waste-to-energy facilities. In 1990, they joined Freese and Nichols as a Senior Environmental Engineer specializing in wastewater process engineering. Leonard was involved in process analysis, design, troubleshooting, and peer review for both municipal and industrial wastewater treatment facilities. Leonard also conducted treatability testing for these facilities. In 2003, they briefly worked as an Adjunct Graduate Faculty member at the University of Texas at Arlington. Leonard's expertise and contributions to anaerobic digestion monitoring are recognized with the IA/PA monitoring technique, also known as the "Ripley Ratio" in digestion literature.

Leonard Ripley has an extensive education history in the field of environmental engineering. Leonard obtained a Ph.D. in Civil/Environmental Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1980 to 1987. Prior to that, they pursued a Master of Science degree in Environmental Engineering at Vanderbilt University from 1978 to 1980. Leonard also holds a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering Science degree with Honors from The University of Texas at Austin, which they earned from 1973 to 1975.

Furthermore, Ripley completed an undergraduate degree in Biology/Math at The University of Texas at El Paso from 1970 to 1973. Leonard began their education at Coronado High School in El Paso, TX from 1965 to 1970.

Additionally, Ripley has obtained several certifications throughout their career. These include becoming a WEF Fellow from the Water Environment Federation in September 2019. In addition, they are a Board Certified Environmental Engineer in Water Supply/Wastewater Engineering (BCEE-WS/WE), obtained from The American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists in November 2010. Finally, Ripley is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Texas, which they obtained in January 1991.
