Community Manager

Operations · United Kingdom · Remote possible

Job description

Newsweek is the global media organization that has earned audience time and trust for more than 90 years. Newsweek reaches 100 million people each month with thought-provoking news, opinion, images, graphics, and video delivered across a dozen print and digital platforms. Headquartered in New York City, Newsweek also publishes international editions in EMEA and Asia.

As Newsweek nears its 100-year anniversary, we’re looking to expand how we communicate with our loyal audience to promote civil dialogue and deepen their engagement with Newsweek as we further our mission to seek common ground.

Newsweek is seeking a Community Manager to join our social team. This new role will primarily focus on our robust online comments and commenters, deepening relationships, highlighting the best comments and working to increase the level of dialogue. As a part of our social team, this person will also help engage on other platforms, from Reddit to other social channels.

The ideal candidate knows the difference between posting content and communicating with audience. They understand that the role of social media is shifting, and, increasingly, commentary is happening outside of legacy social media. They’ll know how to nurture dialogue, discussion and healthy debate, transitioning a transient community of online posters to loyal fans and proponents of Newsweek’s mission.

This person must be able to work with content and audience at the speed of news, fostering conversation on platform and using every tool we must promote better dialogue. It goes without saying that they should be experts on the differences between social platforms, but they must also understand news cycles, U.S. politics and how to ensure conversations stay spirited, but don’t turn toxic.

Candidates should have prior experience working as part of an online content operation, particularly in news-related topics, and be able to use technology in smart, flexible ways to be a self-starter who pursues growth in the size of our engaged base and the quality of the discourse. Help us build the future of Newsweek and grow its base of loyal fans.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience being the voice of social brands, including how to engage readers, when to avoid engaging and how to draw out the best conversations.
  • Ability to rapidly learn new technology platforms and flexibly apply ideas.
  • Extraordinary accuracy, spelling and grammar skills.
  • Sophisticated knowledge of how to excel on each social platform.
  • Teamwork, functioning as part of an energetic team who all contribute ideas, hands-on work and execution to deliver fast, functional campaigns.
  • Above all, curiosity — the ability to solve problems and thrive in a lively news environment.

Preferred additional qualifications:

  • Experience in a fast-paced digital newsroom environment.
  • Familiarity using AI in novel ways to be more effective.
  • Ability to tactically work with data to track KPIs and highlight opportunities.

Newsweek is an equal opportunity employer. We seek employees of diverse backgrounds and are committed to providing an inclusive, equitable and respectful workplace.
