About this role

We are seeking a dynamic and strategic finance leader to join Substack as the Head of FP&A and Strategic Finance. In this role, you will report directly to the CFO and lead all aspects of financial planning, analysis, and long-range strategic forecasting. You will be a key business partner to the leadership team, providing insights and guidance on business performance, growth strategies, and financial decision-making. This is a critical role for ensuring Substack scales efficiently and drives sustainable growth in a fast-paced, innovative environment.

Our cash compensation salary range for this role is $220,000-$260,000. Multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, determine final offer amounts and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A)

• Own the annual budget process, quarterly forecasts, and long-term financial planning
• Develop and maintain financial models that provide comprehensive insights into business performance
• Partner with department heads to provide financial guidance, ensuring alignment of financial goals with business strategies
• Drive variance analysis to ensure accountability and understanding of financial outcomes against plan

Strategic Finance

• Provide thought leadership on growth initiatives, resource allocation, and capital efficiency
• Lead scenario analysis and financial modeling to support key decisions, including M&A, partnerships and new product launches
• Collaborate closely with the business and product teams to analyze the financial impact of new features and services
• Provide ongoing analysis of competitive positioning and market opportunities

Reporting and Insights

• Develop and enhance management reporting to provide key stakeholders with actionable insights
• Prepare materials and present financial results, forecasts, and strategic insights to the leadership team
• Partner with the accounting team to ensure the integrity of financial results and adherence to financial controls

Cross-functional Collaboration

• Work closely with operations, marketing, sales, and product teams to ensure that financial strategies are integrated into all aspects of the business
• Support fundraising activities, including preparation for potential future rounds, working closely with the CFO and external stakeholders

Qualifications:

• 10+ years experience in FP&A, strategic finance, or investment banking with at least 3 years in a leadership role
• Experience at a high-growth tech company, preferably in consumer SaaS or Marketplace platforms
• Strong understanding of financial modeling, budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning
• Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to distill complex financial data into actionable insights
• Proven track record of partnering with senior leadership to drive financial and strategic outcomes
• Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization
• Advanced proficiency in financial systems and Excel
• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, or related field
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and handle multiple priorities with a high degree of accuracy
